Ferrari 575: A Legacy Forged in Power and Refinement

Introduced in 2002, The Ferrari 575 was designed by the renowned Italian Lorenzo Ramaciotti from Pininfarina. It marked a significant advancement in one of Ferrari's classic designs, as well as boasting a range of mechanical enhancements over its predecessor, the 550 Maranello.

The 575M name signified a key change from its predecessor, with an increased effective displacement from 5500cc to 5750cc. This enhancement not only acknowledged a difference in size but also gave a boost in power output. The “M” stands for “modificato”, the Italian word for “modified”, indicating an overall enhancement in the vehicle's performance.

Further improvements included larger brake discs for better stopping power, a more balanced weight distribution for improved handling, sleeker aerodynamics for better performance, and an advanced suspension system similar to the one first seen in the Ferrari 355.

Additionally, the 575 is notable for being the first V12 Ferrari road car to incorporate an F1-style transmission. This feature ensures smoother gear changes, making the car more suitable for comfortable long-distance driving, in line with the characteristics of a Grand Tourer, rather than a race car.

In 2005, Ferrari introduced a GTC handling package along with a convertible version known as the 575 Superamerica. This had increased power compared to the Maranello with an extra 25 hp and Ferrari promoted it as the world’s fastest convertible car.

They also claimed the honour of the world’s first rotating hardtop using carbon fiber, going from closed-coupe to fully open convertible in just seven seconds. An innovative and lesser-known feature was the electrochromic glass in the roof which at the touch of a button, lets the driver control the level of lighting in the cockpit with 5 tint levels on offer.

The 575 was only in production for 4 years between 2002 - 2006 with 2,056 cars being produced and in early 2006 the 575 was replaced by the 599.

Enzo Ferrari’s philosophy was that there should be one fewer car available than what the market demanded. Therefore only 559 units of the Superamerica were put into production, all of which were sold before production had even begun! Only 43 of those had a manual transmission making them a rare asset and the most collectable today.
