The Ferrari 488: A Turbocharged Evolution

The Ferrari 488 was the successor to the F458; production started on the 488 in 2015 and ran up until 2020. The 488 GTB, (Gran Turismo Berlinetta), was the first mid-engine Ferrari to use a turbocharged V8 since the F40, which is 28 years of naturally aspirated Italian engineering; so why go back to the turbocharger we hear you ask? Well, it's simple really - more power, more torque, lower CO2, and better mpg.

Let's compare the 458 and the 488 to understand why Ferrari added the turbocharge functionality. The 458 Italia's 4497cc V8 made 562 bhp at 900 rpm with 24 mpg. In contrast, the 488 GTB's smaller 3902cc twin-turbo V8 ramps that up to 661 bhp at 8000 rpm with 25 mpg. That's an impressive jump in performance with an extra 99 bhp and a slight improvement in fuel economy, but let's be honest, if you own a Ferrari, fuel costs are rarely a concern, it's all about the horsepower!

The 488s twin-turbo V8 has enormous reserves of power that are easily accessible thanks to the seven-speed paddle-shift gearbox's lightning-fast shifts. The 488 is a double-edged sword; it shows us that the days of naturally aspirated engines are reaching the end of the road whilst introducing us to the very forefront of turbocharge technology.

The 488 also marks a change in Ferrari’s traditional naming convention that we've all become accustomed to. The 488 name refers to the cubic capacity of one of its eight cylinders, which breaks away from Ferrari lore. The 458 Italia's name came from the car's 4.5 litre eight cylinder engine, like the classic Dino 246, whose engine had 2.4 litres and six cylinders.

Ferrari framed the 488 as a supercar that offers “Extreme performance and driving thrills”. The 488 generates a max power output of 661 bhp, built to quench your thirst for speed, launching you from 0 to 60 mph in 3.0 seconds and reaching a staggering top speed of 205 mph. The 488's performance places itself as a top challenger within the supercar league, counting only the likes of the McLaren 650s and Lamborghini Huracan as its direct rivals.

Here's a fun fact about the 488's transmission; its 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, manufactured for Ferrari by Magna PT, was based on the transmission used in the 458. Magna PT, formally known as Getrag, is the world's largest supplier of transmission systems for passenger and commercial vehicles.

Moving on swiftly to the styling of the 488 which not only looks sharp but also improves its performance. Its unique design increases the car's downforce by 50% while reducing drag, making it much more stable and faster. The 488's standout features include sculpted sides and a large air intake, reminiscent of the classic Ferrari 308 GTB, which are key to its high-speed capabilities and distinctive look

Ferrari is famous for producing variants from each new addition that leaves the production line at Maranello, which from the 488 model would be the 488 Spider, 488 Pista, and the 488 Pista Spider. Ferrari also produced a special edition version of the 488 known as the 488 Pista Piloti.

The spider is the convertible iteration of the 488 coupe. The Pista (Italian word for track), is a supercar that brought a driver, track, and adrenaline feeling to every road it is driven on. The 488 Pista is also powered by the most powerful V8 engine in Ferrari's history. Making its 0 to 60 mph 0.15 seconds faster than the 488 GTB, and maxing out at a top speed of 211 mph, which is 6 mph more than the 488 GTB. The Pista is also 91 kg lighter thanks to the use of carbon fiber on the hood, bumpers and rear spoiler.

Motorsport is at the very heart of the Ferrari brand. The 488 GTE and GT3 were Ferrari's offerings to compete in races like the 2016 WeatherTech Sportscar Championship at the 24 Hours of Daytona to the 2016 Australian GT Championship at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne.
