To mark 20 years of an exclusive collaboration with Italian car designers and coachbuilders Pininfarina, in 1973 Ferrari unveiled the Dino 308 GT4, a V8 mid-engined Grand Tourer. Its angular body style featured pop-up headlights, boomerang-shaped air intakes and useable rear seats, especially when compared to the previous 365 GTC4. The 2+2 coupe had a top speed of 155 mph and production of the 308 lasted for 7 years until it was superseded by the Mondial 8.

1975 saw the release of the 308 GTB and 2 years later in 1977 came the 308 GTS which was developed with Pininfarina to help make open-top sports car driving a dream come true. The 308 GTS was a Targa design, and the hard top could be stored away behind the rear seats when not in use.

Two more models of 308 were manufactured in the production year 1980, the 308 GTBi and 308 GTSi. Both models have elevated worldwide thanks to the popular TV series “Magnum PI”. The GTBi’s body style was almost identical to the 308 GTB and the interior was also very similar with the main differences being a new stitch pattern on the leather-trimmed bucket seats and the clock and oil gauge being moved away from the other main instruments to make them more visible to the driver. The most notable change was made to the engine as fuel injection systems were introduced as denoted by the “i” suffix in the car’s name. Fuel injection gave both models a smoother power delivery and although the new cleaner engines were less powerful than the previous carburettor ones, both models could manage a top speed of 149 mph.

In 1982 two new 308’s became available, the 308 GTB Quattrovalvole and 308 GTS Quattrovalvole. As raw power had been compromised during the changeover to fuel-injected engines, the engineers at Ferrari worked smart to find a solution and soon identified that four valves per cylinder (Quattrovalvole) offered the optimal solution. The two models were an improvement on their 1980 predecessors and again featured in the hit detective show “Magnum PI”. It is said that the popularity of the show combined with the setting of the show - think tropical islands, sunshine, fast cars, and action, helped contribute to making the 308 the symbolic icon it is today.
