In 1992 Maserati introduced a new 2-door grand tourer that was designed to offer high performance, luxury, and comfort in a stylish and elegant package and this new model was named after its 1967 classic, the Ghibli (first generation).

Production of this second generation ran from 1992 to 1998 and the model was based on the Biturbo platform. Two V6 engines were offered; a 2.0 liter for the domestic market and a 2.8 liter for export.

The 2.8 litrer engine was highly tuned featuring 24 valves, a double overhead camshaft and a twin-turbo. Pace was strong from the 260 hp with the Ghibli capable of reaching a top speed of around 155 mph and accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 6 seconds.

An improved version was added to the range in 1996 called the Ghibli GT. The Ghibli GT was hand-built and based on a tubular chassis directly from the racetrack. Enhancements included a 6-speed Getrag transmission, adjustable suspension, 7-spoke 17" alloy wheels and a new rear differential.

With its dominant and aggressive stance, subtle body styling, luxurious interior, and high performance some have said that the Ghibli GT was the best hand-built car ever produced by Maserati.
