Lamborghini Jarama: The Rare V12 GT
Take the best bits of Lamborghini’s Miura and Espada, mix in Countach style angular lines, and you get the fabulous Jarama. Following the Islero in 1970, this front-engined 2+2 had a 3.9 litre V12 and came in GT (350 hp) and GTS (365 hp) form.
The Jarama may be too heavy to be considered a true sports car due to its steel-only construction. Despite this, the short but wide grand tourer could reach 160 mph and was luxurious and appealing on the inside.
Its stance is low and mean, much like the Espada on which the chassis is based, and the car is fairly spacious thanks to the hatchback-style rear end. It also borrowed the Espada’s suspension.
At the 1972 Geneva Auto Show, Lamborghini revealed the GTS 400, aka the Jarama S. The car looked quite muscly with visible flared arches and a subtle air scoop on the bonnet.
On the inside, its back seats are separated by a centre console running front to back and the elegant interior features Italian leather throughout and a wood panel behind the steering wheel. The cabin became less cluttered in the Jarama S and legroom was improved for passengers in the back.
Other than the LM002 and Urus that were built by Automobili Lamborghini, the Jarama was Lamborghini’s last car to have its engine mounted at the front. Production numbers were low, only 177 were ever built, so you don’t see many on the road or at classic car rallies - if you do, be sure to take a photo!
