Evolving the Lamborghini Legacy: Murciélago's Triumph

The Lamborghini Murciélago faced a challenge being the successor to the Lamborghini Diablo, the icon of 11 years prior and also being the first new Lamborghini launched under Audi/Volkswagen ownership. The Murciélago retained Lamborghini's sleek and stylish edge with the classic scissor doors and a wide, dramatic-looking body.

Aerodynamics and cooling were optimised with an active rear wing and air intakes. The Diablo's 6.2 litre V12 engine was adapted to provide a punchy 572 bhp and an impressive soundtrack. Racing from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds and reaching top speeds of 205 mph the Murciélago came along and did not disappoint.

A roadster version was introduced in 2003, followed by the more powerful updated LP 640. The final Murciélago was the LP 670-4 SuperVeloce, powered by the largest and final evolution of the original V12 engine.

The Murciélago was an all-wheel drive mid-engine design, of which the rear differential was integrated. Power was delivered through a 6-speed manual transmission and the suspension used an independent double-wishbone design.

The bodywork featured mostly carbon fiber, except for the steel roof and aluminium scissor doors. The Roadster version employed a manually attached soft roof which was advised to be used only under speeds of 100 mph. Audi's influence could be seen in the refined interior, with a high-quality dashboard, climate control and clean leather seats.

Using all the components of the Murciélago LP 640, but with a facelift on the exterior, was the Reventon - inspired by the fastest aeroplanes. In line with the Lamborghini tradition, this model was named after a fighting bull and was the first Lambo to feature daytime running lamps in the headlights. The body changes to this design created the basis for the company's next flagship model; the Aventador.
