Porsche 924S: A Modernised Classic with Timeless Appeal

The Porsche 924S model was introduced in 1986 and was a revision of the original Porsche 924. The origin of the 924S is an interesting story, essentially, in 1984 VW stopped making the engine blocks used in the 2.0 litre 924 and given that the 924 was substantially cheaper than the 944, this meant that Porsche would not have an entry-level option for sale on the market.

Thus, it was deemed to take the engine from the 944, “de-tune” it and put it in the 924 body. At the same time, Porsche upgraded the suspension, added larger brakes, and modernized the exterior styling. The interior remained the same as in the early 924’s.

The resulting 924S was powered by a 2.5 litre inline-four engine that produced 150 horsepower, and it was offered with either a 5-speed manual or 3-speed automatic transmission. The 924S had improved performance with a top speed of over 130 mph and was capable of 0-60 mph in around 8 seconds.

The 924S was well-received for its handling, performance, and affordability compared to other sports cars of its era, and it remains a popular classic car today. The exact production numbers for the Porsche 924S model are not widely available, however, online sources indicate that just over 16,000 units of the 924S were made during its production run from 1986 to 1988.
